Canada’s men’s ice hockey team has had a strong start to the 2023 IIHF World Championships. The tournament is being held from May 12-28 in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia. Canada is one of two North American nations competing in the tournament, alongside the United States.
In the preliminary round, Canada has played three games, winning all three. In their first game on May 12th, Canada defeated Latvia 6-0. They followed that up with a 5-2 win over Slovenia on May 14th. Canada’s third game on May 16th against Slovakia was a close match, but Canada came out on top after penalties with a final score of 3-2.
Canada is currently in first place in their group, with a total of eight points. They are followed by Czech Republic, Switzerland and Slovakia.

Canada’s next game is against Kazakhztan on May 17th. Kazakhztan is currently in fifth place in the group, with one win (OT) and one loss. Canada will look to continue their winning streak in this game.
The toughest game in the group stage will be against Switzerland on May 20th.
Canada has a rich history in men’s ice hockey, having won 26 medals (13 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze) in the IIHF World Championships. They last won gold in 2016 and are looking to add to their medal count in this year’s tournament.
Canada’s strong start to the tournament has put them in a good position to advance to the playoff round and compete for a medal. The team will need to continue their strong play in their remaining games if they hope to achieve their goal.
